Introduction

“Una voce dalla pietra, il risveglio di ciò che ritorna” is a site-specific sound performance composed by Alessio Nota to accompany the exhibition path of “RITORNI – Il Risveglio delle Origini”.

The project begins with listening to the place: limestone, the Mediterranean landscape, voices, memory and the traces left by time.

Through environmental sounds, recorded voices, synthesizers and electronic transformations, the performance moves through an initially deep and suspended dimension, gradually opening toward a luminous space of stillness and rebirth.

The sound emerges from stone, memory and landscape.

Performance concept

Stone as a sound archive.

Stone as a sound archive.

The composition was conceived as a passage through the memory of the place.

Stone is not treated only as architectural matter, but as an element capable of holding voices, gestures and transformations.

Sound begins from a deep, rough and suspended dimension. Through repetition, noise and electronic transformation, matter gradually opens toward a space of light and rebirth.

The sonic journey

Three moments moving through origin, transformation and return.

Three moments moving through origin, transformation and return.

01

ORIGIN

Deep frequencies, earth, stone and memory form the first threshold of the performance. The composition opens in a slow, subterranean register, as if sound were already present inside the limestone architecture and only needed to be listened to in order to re-emerge. This first movement does not describe the place from the outside; it approaches it as a living archive, where silence, dust, breath and resonance become the raw material of a hidden voice returning to the surface.

02

TRANSFORMATION

Recorded voices, environmental noise and electronic textures begin to move through the space as mutable matter. Fragments gathered from the surrounding landscape are stretched, repeated and reassembled through synthesis and live processing, creating a field in which gesture and architecture respond to one another. The transformation is gradual and tactile: rough frequencies, vocal traces and electronic pressure converge into a shifting body of resonance, tension and movement.

03

RETURN

The final movement releases the density of the opening and allows the composition to move toward light, stillness and return. What began as a hidden voice inside the stone becomes a wider, more contemplative field, in which sound opens toward the landscape rather than closing the narrative. The tension slowly dissolves into a suspended calm, suggesting rebirth as a process of listening: a return to matter, memory and silence with a renewed sense of presence.

Instruments and process

A dialogue between field, voice, stone and electronic transformation.

The performance was developed as a site-specific sound work built from a dialogue between recorded elements, voice, environmental matter and electronic instruments. Rather than treating the location as a simple backdrop, Alessio Nota approached the space as an acoustic source: limestone, open air, architectural resonance and the atmosphere of the evening became part of the compositional material.

Field recordings and environmental sounds were gathered as traces of the place, then placed in relation with recorded voices, drone structures and electronic textures. The Make Noise Strega functioned not as a technical display, but as an instrument for transformation: a way to disturb, stretch and illuminate the raw material through saturation, instability and live manipulation.

The result is a composition that exists between documentation and performance, between landscape and gesture. Each sound element remains connected to the space in which it was activated, yet is reshaped into a temporary form that could only belong to that moment. Stone, voice and synthesis become a single listening environment, where the process is less about producing a fixed track than revealing how a place can be heard, transformed and remembered.
